Project Launched for Waste-free Tourism in KP

October 30, 2023

PESHAWAR: In an effort to encourage responsible travel for a waste-free future at the province’s tourist destinations, the travel Department, in conjunction with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project (KITE), has started a new programme.

According to a press release issued here, the Travel Responsibly for Experiencing Ecotourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TREK) awareness campaign was jointly launched by the KITE, Galiyat Development Authority, Abbottabad, and Nestlé Pakistan.

In order to encourage responsible tourism for a waste-free future in Nathiagali, the World Bank KITE Project, Nestlé, and the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have partnered to create TREK.

According to Touseef Khalid, the director of KITE Project, TREK is an innovative programme aimed at reducing, reusing, and recycling waste. It is being carried out in collaboration with the World Bank Group and Nestlé Pakistan. Additionally, the programme includes a community engagement plan with activities designed to address issues related to waste management, pollution, and wildlife destruction.

“Apart from the provision of restrooms for tourists’ convenience under KITE, activities within TREK include the provision of solid waste management equipment, awareness campaigns for tourists, installation of information boards, and training of local communities on waste minimization and collection,” the official stated.

It should be noted that in December 2020, Prime Minister Imran Khan introduced the logo for TREK, a project under the KITE initiative that has been named one of the federal government’s major accomplishments of 2020.

Samer Chedid, the chief executive officer of Nestlé Pakistan, addressed the attendees and outlined the company’s goal for none of the packaging, including plastics, to wind up in landfills or rivers.

“We have committed to making sure that all of our packaging is recyclable or reusable by 2025 in order to meet this goal.”Director of the Galiyat Development Authority Raza Habib and senior private sector specialist Kiran Afzal of the World Bank expressed gratitude for the project and expressed hope that it will address pollution and waste management while ensuring the safety of wildlife.
