Islamabad is Getting Two New Dams Soon

October 31, 2023

The citizens of the federal capital are experiencing a water scarcity, which is being addressed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) through the construction of two new dams.

The employment of a consulting firm to conduct a feasibility study and produce a report evaluating the viability of the planned dam projects has received approval from the CDA Board. The terms of reference (ToRs) for this purpose have already been prepared by the CDA Water Wing.

The civic authority will invite tenders in accordance with Section 42F of the PPRA regulations after receiving the chairman’s consent. Only Army engineering schools and government consulting businesses like NESPAK will be able to take part in the procurement process, though.

Shahdara Dam and Chiniot Dam, which will be built upstream of the Simly Dam, are the two proposed dams. Simly Dam can now hold 6,881 million gallons of water, a dramatic decline of 33% from its original capacity over time.

The Chiniot Dam is expected to hold between 18 and 20 million gallons of water. In contrast, Shahdara Dam will be able to hold six million gallons of water. Islamabad’s metropolitan districts receive 80 million gallons per day, significantly less than the 125 million gallons that are needed.

When the water level in Khanpur and Simly Dams drops, this figure also drops. Simly Dam currently holds 28 million gallons of water, and when it fills up, that number rises to 32 million.

In addition, 9 to 9.5 million gallons of water are supplied by the Khanpur dam. Thirty million gallons of water are supplied by tube wells, while two million gallons are supplied by the Rawal Dam. Furthermore, five million gallons of water are supplied overall by Shahdara, Saidpur, and Noorpur.
