How Winter Tourism Boosts Communities in Pakistan

January 15, 2024

GILGIT-BALTISTAN: With its captivating valleys, majestic mountains, frigid deserts, singing brooks, and mesmerizing lakes, Gilgit Baltistan welcomes tourists from all over the nation and the globe with an abundance of natural resources.

This region is home to the second-largest glacier in the world, Siachen, the magnificent Deosai plain at 14,000 feet above sea level, and the pride of Pakistan, the K-2 and Nanga Parbat. It also boasts three of the world’s greatest mountain ranges: the Karakoram, the Himalayan, and the Hindukash.

The magnificent Karakoram Highway, sculpted by mountains, numerous lakes dispersed throughout the country, and towering pines, speaks volumes about its tranquil beauty, which is constantly praised by those who enjoy the outdoors.

Pakistan’s Winter Tourism: A Valuable Source of Income for Residents

In addition to providing opportunities for festivals, snowboarding, skiing, trekking, and other outdoor activities, the winter months in Great Britain also afford the ability to get up close and personal with the locals.

Living in a difficult area, the majority of the population often depends on income from the tourism, handicraft, and dried fruit industries, with tourism providing them with a sufficient dividend to sustain themselves.

GB Asif Ullah Khan, the secretary for sports and tourism, estimates that around two million domestic and international backpackers took part in various winter and summer celebrations in 2023. He continued by saying that they are encouraging wintertime activities and work to maintain this area accessible all year round so that visitors can take in the distinctive customs and culture of the locals.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, ice hockey is one of the most popular winter sports, with competitions taking place in several local areas. Its skiing regions of Rattu and Naltar are well-known, and the National Ski Championship draws competitors from all over the world. Locals have a special opportunity to make money during the winter tourism season, but more needs to be done to support the local tourism sector.
