Regulating Sports Tourism in Pakistan and Advancing Infrastructure

December 14, 2023

ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi stated that Pakistan has enormous potential for sports and adventure tourism, but he also emphasized the need for enhanced infrastructure and sensible regulation in order to explore this unexplored market fully.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the third Sustainable Mountain Sports Tourism Conference, he stated that the availability of facilities was the most critical element in the growth of both domestic and sports tourism.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan hosted the ‘Revival of Mountain Glory’ event, which brought together prominent mountaineers from the nation, such as Samina Baig, Naila Kiani, and Sajid Sadpara, who had achieved global recognition via summiting the highest peaks.

According to President Alvi, Pakistan is blessed with extraordinarily tranquil natural beauty, especially in its northern regions, where the mountains and snow-capped peaks serve as major attractions for travelers and hikers. He stated that the breathtaking Malam Jabba and Naltar regions of the nation have excellent skiing and tremendous potential for adventure sports. Also, he added, “The world’s best treks are found in the Hunza Valley, among the massive Karakoram mountains.” The president emphasized the necessity of establishing a tourist regulatory framework to encourage domestic travel.

He strongly emphasized providing amenities for travelers, such as better transportation, spotless accommodations and guest rooms, and skilled labor. He highlighted that the uncontrolled rush of visitors resulted in traffic congestion and disturbances to the public order.

President Arif Alvi also suggested developing new tourist spots while handling existing ones well to manage the number of tourists. He also urged people to travel to vacation destinations with an awareness of environmental responsibility. He described a tranquil atmosphere and security as important components in boosting tourism in the nation.

As the country with the highest mountain peaks and glaciers outside of the Arctic, Pakistan is a terrific destination for adventure and mountain tourism, according to Air Vice Marshal (retd) Ijaz Malik, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. He summarized the conference’s conclusions on sports tourism, emphasizing the importance of developing a domestic tourism policy to generate economic advantages, including tourism as a subject in the national curriculum and equipping human resources with modern skills.

Through rock and sport climbing, hiking, and trekking, the Alpine Club of Pakistan is doing its part to promote sports tourism in the country, according to President Abu Zafar Sadiq. He said winter sports, paragliding, mountain biking, and rafting also occurred in cooperation with partners.

On this occasion, President Alvi presented appreciation shields to Alpine Club executives, hikers, and mountaineers.
