China’s foreign ministry is experimenting with granting entry without a visa to people from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia.
From December 1, 2023, until November 30, 2024, citizens of these countries with regular passports are permitted to enter China without a visa for up to 15 days for business or pleasure.
According to a statement released on Friday by spokesperson Mao Ning, the effort seeks to “promote China’s high-quality development and opening up.” Most visitors to China now need to obtain a visa to enter the country.
Citizens of Singapore and Brunei are the only exceptions to this infrequent exemption, which allows them admission without a visa for up to 15 days for transit, family visits, business, and tourism.
Remarkably, China began to grant all kinds of visas in March 2023. This is a significant change from March 2020, when severe travel restrictions were implemented because of the COVID-19 epidemic. For three years, China implemented some of the most stringent COVID-19 regulations in the world, including frequent testing mandates, lockdowns, and travel restrictions.
In December of the previous year, the nation’s zero-COVID policy—which had significant economic ramifications—was lifted. China welcomed tens of millions of foreign tourists each year before the pandemic.
