Youth Must Play Role for Responsible Tourism: MD PTDC
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is a nation endowed with enormous tourism potential, and young people have a responsibility to educate the public about responsible travel by serving as positive role models for the world’s youth on Pakistani tourist destinations.
According to Aftab Ur Rehman Rana, Managing Director of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), Pakistan has seen an increase in the number of visitors, both domestic and foreign, in recent years, which has helped the country’s tourism industry grow. In addition to government efforts, the private sector is also playing a significant role in this regard.
After three years of difficulty in the tourism business owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, over a million international tourist arrivals were registered until June 2023, and by the end of this year, that number would approach two million, according to MD PTDC in an interview.
This year has also seen a rise in the number of Pakistanis living abroad in the Northern Areas, which is beneficial to the nation’s economy and indicates that Pakistan’s tourism sector is growing and opening up prospects for the private sector and investment.
According to him, the PTDC has just opened the National Tourism Portal, which will help visitors plan their trip and provide them with booking, travel information, and amenities.
In addition, he suggested that the younger generation in their travel guide materials should create a sense of responsibility to save the environment, discourage pollution, and draw an international audience to this piece of land. In recent years, young vloggers and adventure lovers have recorded much about Pakistan’s beauty, natural environment, sustainable tourism, eco tourism, and adventure tourism. This has increased the movement of domestic tourists for recreational purposes.
According to MD PTDC, Pakistan boasts a wide variety of tourist features, including the longest glaciers and the tallest mountains on earth, which present a wonderful potential to develop adventure tourism in its many forms. “There are hundreds of stunning lakes in our region, many of which can only be reached by hiking trails.
The speaker noted that the Makran coast boasts stunning scenery, with the Rocky Mountains visible on one side and stunning sandy beaches on the other. These natural features reflect the ideal marine environment found in Pakistan. The speaker also mentioned that Pakistan is home to one of the oldest civilizations in human history, with notable world heritage sites, Buddhist heritage from Gandhara, Hindu shrines, Sikh gudawaras, and shrines dedicated to Sufi saints.
He claimed that Pakistan has become known worldwide as a destination for adventure sports and tourism that will not only strengthen the nation’s economy but also foster positive perceptions of it. These activities range from water sports to desert jeep rallies, paragliding, river rafting, para jumping, wingsuit flying, and many more.
