August 17, 2023

ISLAMABAD: Professional and amateur photographers and painters from all across Pakistan entered a competition held on Monday at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) with a total of 322 images and 100 paintings depicting Pakistani landscapes, culture, and adventure sports.

In honour of International Tourism Day 2022, the tournament was organised by Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC). For the painting competition, there were two categories: young and children.

Awn Chaudhry, the prime minister’s advisor on sports and tourism, launched the event.

Speaking at the event, he said the artworks demonstrated young and emerging artists’ efforts to educate the public about the value of travel, environmental concerns, and the promotion of sustainable and ethical travel.

Aftabur Rehman Rana, the managing director of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), stated that the goal of this tournament was to involve young people in healthy activities while also teaching them about various hobbies.

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) established World Tourism Day in September 1979. This day was selected to fall on the anniversary of the UNWTO Statutes’ adoption on September 27, 1970, a significant turning point in tourism history. ‘Rethinking Tourism’ serves as the topic for this year.

The exhibition was followed by a two-day national conference where experts and representatives of the provincial, federal, and related departments discussed issues such as removing barriers to promote foreign tourism in Pakistan, rebuilding the tourism industry after floods and heavy rains, problems with mountaineering and trekking tourism in Pakistan, developing and promoting tourism in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), and initiatives of provincial tourism.

Meanwhile, in order to enhance the economic prosperity and development of our nation, President Dr. Arif Alvi committed to continue the commitment to creating priorities that take into account the potential of the tourism sector.

“Pakistan is a country with attractive and wonderful tourist sites in the world due to its remarkable landscape, diversity, and rich history of ancient civilisations,” he said in his message for globe Tourism Day. It could be used for religious travel.

According to the president, tourism is a crucial source of income for the populace and is unquestionably relevant to and linked to local economic growth as well as the upgrading of public infrastructure in remote locations, both of which would be advantageous for the entire nation in a number of ways.

“Tourism is a means of generating foreign cash, a means of generating employment, and a means of reducing poverty. Undoubtedly, it also fosters harmony between citizens from all regions of the nation, he added, adding that the Pakistani government has focused on this sector during the last few years.

We now have the chance to reconsider this industry, which was adversely affected by the pandemic along with the rest of the world and is now severely afflicted by floods, since this year’s subject is “Rethinking Tourism.”

“Long-term strategic planning is urgently needed to boost the tourism industry on a sustainable basis and set new parameters for securing its future,” he said.

In addition to the requirement for more international visitors to Pakistan, he stated that programmes should be created with a special emphasis on safe and secure tourism.
