ISLAMABAD: The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ 40th-anniversary festivities on Wednesday night sent a strong message about the pressing need to recognize the inalienable rights of the Cypriot people.
Dilsad Senol, the ambassador of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, fervently urged the international community to reevaluate the cruel and unfair isolation that the Turkish Cypriot people are subjected to.
Diplomats and local leaders attended the event, underscoring its importance and reiterating the nation’s position on the international scene.
Ambassador Senol greeted the people of the TRNC and wished for a day of pride, harmony, and advancement. He also welcomed the participation of former and current Pakistani legislators. This acknowledgment demonstrated the importance of the TRNC’s independence movement.
She expressed thanks on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot People to the fraternal state of Pakistan for its continuous support of the cause and to her homeland, the Republic of Turkiye, for its steadfast support of the TRNC.
As she honored the heroes who gave their lives in defense of Turkish Cypriot freedom and showed thanks and respect to the veterans, Ambassador Senol declared, “It is high time for the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
The Turkish Cypriot people declared their independent state forty years ago as a tangible manifestation of their inherent freedom and sovereignty. The ambassador stated they have since resisted all attempts to eradicate their lawful political will and rightful presence on the island of Cyprus.
“We have preserved peace and tranquility on the island over the years by defending our national identity, values, and beliefs with unwavering support from our motherland, Turkiye, and the Anatolian people.”
She was proud to point out the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s significant advancements in democracy, the economy, social equality, and human rights. Ambassador Senol highlighted successes in higher education and tourism, two important economic drivers.
But she lamented the Greek Cypriots’ unwillingness to share wealth and power with the island’s co-owners, the Turkish Cypriots.
The core of the proposal, she added, was to secure the inherent sovereign equality and equal international status of the state of the Turkish Cypriot people. “In line with the calls made by the UN Secretary-General ‘to think outside the box,’ we have tabled our new vision regarding the solution to the Cyprus issue at the 5+UN informal meeting in Geneva in April 2021, which would bring the much-needed stability, security, and cooperation in and around our island with a win-win approach,” she said.
She cited the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who last year at the UN General Assembly urged the international community to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus formally and to stop the unjust persecution of Turkish Cypriots who were being isolated from the outside world due to restrictions that were obviously in violation of UN principles.
