The Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka has formally instituted a free visa policy for citizens of seven nations, starting immediately, in a major attempt to strengthen its tourism economy.
Approved by Cabinet Ministers on October 24, 2023 (Approval No: 2311885/6021023), this action is part of a pilot program that will run until March 31, 2024.
Requirements and Types of Passports
Citizens of China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan are eligible for a visa-free entry program under the recently enacted plan. Those with diplomatic, official, public affairs, service, and ordinary passports from the below nations are eligible.
Validity of Visa and Requirements for Entry
Travelers have the freedom to enter and exit Sri Lanka twice within their 30-day visa period thanks to the free visa, which is valid for multiple entries.
Sri Lankan ETA Application Procedure
Applications for Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) must be submitted online. Usually, the ETA application procedure takes three business days to finish.
Documents Required
A valid passport, travel insurance, evidence of sufficient finances, and airline reservations are among the necessary paperwork. The Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) promises that the payment gateway screen will be removed shortly, however it is currently present throughout the submission of ETA applications.

General Guidelines
The seven approved countries’ citizens are the only ones eligible for this free visa program. Foreign nationals must abide by the general guidelines that apply to Sri Lanka ETA.
Free ETA Extension
The 30-day validity term of the free ETA cannot be extended. An application may be submitted with the necessary amount paid if an extension is needed.
Time Spent Processing and Suggestions
Applications for ETAs are normally processed in three working days or less. To prevent any possible delays, it is advised to apply well in advance.
