Pakistan Attracted $16 Billion in Visitor Spending in 2022
In a remarkable turn of events, Pakistan’s tourism sector is experiencing a significant upswing, with the World Bank reporting a staggering $16 billion in visitor spending in 2022. Anticipating a continued surge, the country aims to reach a remarkable $30 billion in tourism revenue by 2033. Despite these impressive figures, experts note that the sector’s contribution to Pakistan’s GDP, at 5.9 percent in 2022, still holds untapped potential.
The post-Covid era has witnessed an exceptional rise in domestic tourism, with over 1.2 million tourists flocking to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in 2021 and 2022 alone.
In response to this influx and recognizing the need for sustainable growth, the “Travel Responsibly for Experiencing Eco-tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” (TREK) initiative has been launched. This collaborative effort involves the Government of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the World Bank, and Nestlé Pakistan, aligning with the ongoing Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project (KITE).
The KITE project, established in 2020, focuses on heritage preservation and tourism infrastructure development. Complementing these efforts, TREK has embarked on awareness campaigns for tourists and training programs for local communities and hospitality businesses. More than 650 participants from over 150 hotels and restaurants in key tourist areas, including Peshawar, Nathiagali, Abbottabad, Swat, Naran, and Chitral districts, have benefited from TREK’s initiatives.
The emphasis on responsible tourism extends to effective waste management techniques, ensuring that the surge in visitors does not come at the cost of the environment. These collaborative endeavors aim to harness tourism’s economic potential and create an inclusive and environmentally friendly experience for visitors.
As Pakistan is a burgeoning tourist destination, the convergence of public and private efforts marks a promising chapter in the country’s journey toward sustainable tourism and economic prosperity.
