Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated in a statement on Vesak Day—which celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and death of the Buddha—that the teachings of Buddhism can offer significant insights on how to improve the condition of the earth and lead the way to a more sustainable future.
“The spirit to care not just for ourselves but for others based on an awareness of our interlinked fates lies at the heart of Buddhism,” Mr. Ban explained.
These teachings call on individuals, groups, and governments to work together for the benefit of all people. Mr. Ban remarked that this was the finest strategy for ensuring personal and global development in an increasingly interconnected society.
As nations get ready for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Brazil next month, Mr. Ban said that the Buddha’s teachings are more important than ever. He called Rio+20 a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to set the world on a more equitable and sustainable path of development.”
If we are to address big global problems, such as the development of dangerous weapons or intolerance and inequality, “we must also change longstanding assumptions and open our minds to new ideas and possible solutions,” Mr. Ban said.
He hoped that Buddhists and people of all faiths would utilize Vesak to consider how they may alter their behavior to create a better world in the future.
