Buddhism Teaches Humans to Share the World With Others

August 8, 2023

Among the world’s great religions, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena cites Buddhism for its teaching that humans should get along with other species.

‘The greatest gift we can give to the world is the Buddha’s own Theravada teachings,’ he declared.

On May 4, he addressed the crowd gathered at the Kebellawala Sri Rathanasiri Bhikku Training Centre and Maha Pirivena for the official kickoff of the State Vesak festival.

There were international dignitaries, invited guests, and venerable members of the Maha Sangha and Buddhasasana in attendance.

The Most Venerable members of the Maha Sangha have played a crucial role in the effort to materialize the most profound teachings of Buddhism. A good chance for the people of the Puttalam district in particular to work together for the improvement and safety of everyone can be found in this year’s State Vesak Festival, which would pave the path for realizing Buddhism and living according to its timeless teachings.

The Prime Minister argued that The Buddha taught the world that progress entails more than just technological advancement. People have seen firsthand how their material possessions can be destroyed and vulnerable to the principle of impermanence in a world where change is continual.

He went on to say that the past four years have not seen the State Vesak Festival because of the country’s many challenges, but that this year’s event would provide children with a great opportunity to learn about the true spirit of Vesak celebration firsthand.

In addition, the Prime Minister thanked everyone who had worked so hard to make the Vesak Festival a reality.

Somarathe Vidanapathirana, secretary of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, has announced a number of year-long special initiatives to coincide with the State Vesak Festival. The goal of the work to translate and digitize the Sambuddha Jayanthi Tripitaka is to make it easy for individuals all over the world to understand Buddhism and better their lives in accordance with the Buddha’s noble and eternal teachings.

He stated that Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Buddhasasana often consults with the Maha Sangha for guidance in its efforts to become a hub for the study and dissemination of Theravada Buddhism.
