ISLAMABAD: A memorandum of understanding (MoA) establishing a collaborative Humanistic Buddhism Research Centre at Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) and Fo Guang Shan Education Centre, Malaysia, has been inked.
According to a news statement from Quaid-i-Azam University on Wednesday, the MoA was signed by renowned dignitaries including Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar and Prof. Dr. Ghani-ur-Rahman from the Taxila Institute of Asian Civilizations.
The head of the President’s Office, Chang Yin Liang (Ven You Deng), and Prof. Dr. Danny Wong Tze Ken, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Malaya, were on hand to represent the Fo Guang Shan Education Centre.
With a focus on humanities, culture, and history as well as study of Buddha’s teachings and humanistic Buddhism, the agreement will encourage and facilitate academic and research collaboration between the two schools.
The vice chancellor, speaking to the audience, noted that the Gandhara civilization flourished in the area and had a significant impact on the art, culture, and religion of the region and beyond.
He continued, “This collaboration and the founding of the Humanistic Buddhism Research Centre at Quaid-i-Azam University would encourage interreligious conversation and assist our understanding of local history.
Leong Kam Fong from the Fo Guang Shan Education Centre, Dr Firuza Begham Binti Mustafa, deputy dean (Faculty Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya), Prof Dr Mohammad Idrees, dean, Faculty of Social Sciences (QAU), Prof Dr Shahid Hameed, dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences (QAU), and Prof Dr Sarwat Jahan, dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences (QAU), also attended the ceremony.
