Ban Ki-moon, the head of the United Nations, stated in his message on the Day of Vesak that the Buddhist teachings of compassion and nonviolence can assist the world community in addressing urgent difficulties in the contemporary times of hateful language aimed at dividing communities and violent wars.
The UN Secretary General claimed that the Buddha’s teachings have been a “great source of wisdom” in his life and that he has been “fortunate” to have learned them through his mother, a devoted Buddhist.
The task, according to him, is to apply Buddha’s teaching to the “real problems in our world today.” Buddhism, he claimed, teaches the world the law of love and compassion for all living things.
The International Day of Vesak, Mr. Ban emphasised, serves as a reminder to practise compassion for all people. This includes bridging religious gaps, opposing intolerance, and treating everyone equally.
Buddhism emphasises the interconnectedness of all beings. Together, we must address the world’s issues. Poverty, displaced people, natural disasters, illnesses, war, and climate change are all global issues, according to Mr. Ban.

He urged the international community to embrace Vesak as an opportunity to reach out and overcome barriers, cultivate a feeling of community, and display compassion on a global scale for the benefit of the future.
