KARACHI TO: According to reports from the local media, a railway derailment that occurred on Sunday in the southern part of Pakistan resulted in the deaths of at least 15 persons.
An official with the railway company told HUM News that the Hazara Express was in the process of traveling from Karachi to Abbottabad when eight of its coaches became derailed.
Railway officials were quoted on Pakistan’s state-run news station as saying that at least 15 people had died and that more than 40 others had been injured.
The derailment took place close to the Sahara railway station in the city of Nawabshah, which is located in the Sindh province’s southernmost region.
Ijaz Shah, an official with the provincial railway, told AFP that the accident resulted in the deaths of several passengers and injuries to several more. He also stated that a relief train was on its way to the location of the incident.
Images that were shared with the local media show scores of people gathered at the scene, with some shattering windows to assist passengers in climbing out of twisted carriages and at least one coach that had flipped.
