TAXILA: A Muslim girl who slipped inside the Sikh temple at Gurdawara Punja Sahib, performed rituals with women pilgrims, and declared she wanted to convert to Sikhism after she was discovered.
Her wish contributed to confusion among the local government and law enforcement organizations.
Wednesday night, as the female devotees of the temple were enjoying their evening meal in the temple’s dining hall, they were aware of the presence of a young woman whom they did not recognize. Earlier, this young lady had been participating in their ceremonies alongside them. She responded that her name is Saira, that she is 14 years old, and that she had gone to the temple because she wanted to convert to Sikhism. When asked about her identification, she answered that she was Saira.
After being informed of this, the congregation members got in touch with the authorities, as well as representatives from the Evacuee Trust Property Board and the Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The girl was turned over to the authorities by the officials who had raced to the temple.
She told the authorities that she lives in Kalabat, which is located in the Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and that her father is a cab driver. This information was provided during the preliminary interview. She stated that she was in the neighborhood visiting a Sikh cloth trader when she learned about a fair that was going to be held at the Gurdwara Punja Sahib in Hassanabdal. After that, she sneaked out of the house and made her way to the temple.
On the other hand, she disclosed to the investigators that she is unable to provide them with the mobile phone numbers of any of her relatives.
The girl later explained to Dawn at the police station in a combination of Urdu and Pashto that she went to the Sikh temple because she was interested in learning more about the religion.
However, when questioned as to why she chose to pay her visit to the Sikh temple located at Gurdwara Punja Sahib, she sobbed and was unable to provide a satisfactory response to the question.
Dawn was informed by Investigating Officer ASI Ismail that the girl does not appear to be in a sound mental state and that she is not disclosing to the police either her address or the contact numbers of her relatives. According to him, the police in the village of Kalabat have been informed, and they are currently seeking to find her family.
She was required to go to Dar ul Aman in Attock for her rehabilitation.
He added that the girl was with a group of Sikh ladies who were entering the Gurdwara for evening prayers when he saw her there. The caretaker at Gurdwara Punja Sahib, Asmat Ullah, said this.
