How Siddhartha Gautama Became ‘The Buddha’

August 8, 2023

Buddhism was started by the spiritual teacher Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as the Buddha. Around the sixth century BCE, he was born into a royal family in ancient India. Throughout his life, he underwent a profound spiritual journey that ultimately resulted in his enlightenment and transformation into the Buddha, the awakened one.

This article examines the significant experiences and realisations that influenced Siddhartha Gautama’s development into the Buddha.

Siddhartha Gautama was born to King Suddhodana and Queen Maya in Lumbini, modern-day Nepal. He was raised in opulence, shielded from the woes of the outside world, and lived a life of leisure and ease within the walls of the palace.

But when Siddhartha reached the age of 29, he started to leave the palace, and it was on these things that he first came face to face with the truths of human misery and old age.

Siddhartha Gautama came across what would later be referred to as the Four Sights on one of his excursions. He saw the inevitable effects of ageing, disease, and death as he first came across an aged person, then a sick person, and eventually a funeral procession. He was profoundly affected by these sights, which made him understand the transience and pain of human life.

Siddhartha was deeply affected by the Four Sights and began to wonder about the meaning of existence and the nature of suffering. He made a decision to look for solutions outside the parameters of his regal life. He gave up his princely position when he was 29 years old, abandoning his wife Yashodhara and their young son Rahula in order to live as a wandering ascetic.

Siddhartha pursued enlightenment via self-mortification, studied under numerous spiritual authorities, and mastered the strict ascetic disciplines.
