Hassanabdal, which is 48 miles from Rawalpindi, is where you’ll find Gurdawara Panja Sahib. The Gurdawara, or temple, which is twice a year visited by both Hindus and Sikhs, has stood for peace for more than three centuries. In Punjabi, the word “Panja” refers to the palm of the hand.
The name of the gurdawara is derived from a handprint on a rock that is thought to be that of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith.
Inscriptions in Gurmukhi script may be seen in the background and on elaborately lit pillars in the foreground.
Legend has it that Guru Nanak stopped a rock that a holy man had thrown at him with his hand, leaving an imprint. When the holy man realised this, he decided to follow Guru Nanak. The handprint on the rock has survived.
A natural spring that emerges from beneath the fabled rock flowing with crystal-clear water in which fish swim. A Gurdawara awning that is decorated.
The Gurdawara’s location is regarded as one of the holiest places in the Sikh religion. Thousands of Sikh and Hindu pilgrims travel from all over the world, including India, to the shrine each year. Special trains transport pilgrims from the other side of the border to Hassanabdal.
The handprint on the rock is said to be that of Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh constructed the imposing gurdawara in the 19th century. It has a temple, a courtyard, a swimming pool, and a guesthouse for travellers.

All visitors are provided with complimentary meals from the temple kitchen for the duration of their stay in the hostel, which has 376 rooms. In 2010–2011, a sizable dining hall with a capacity for more than 1,000 people was created.
